Mercari Display Name vs Username: What's the Difference?

Mercari has two separate name fields, and they do different things. Most sellers set them up without thinking much about the distinction — then later wonder why buyers refer to them by one name while their profile URL shows something else entirely.

Here's how each one works.

Your Mercari username

The username is your unique account handle. It lives in your profile URL:

mercari.com/u/username

Every Mercari account has a username, and no two accounts can share one. It's the identifier the platform uses to distinguish you from every other seller.

Username rules:

  • Letters, numbers, underscores, and hyphens allowed
  • Must be unique across all of Mercari
  • Changes are limited — Mercari allows username changes but restricts how often

Because the username has to be unique and changes are restricted, it's worth getting right before you're established. A username you picked without thinking becomes harder to fix once you have reviews and transaction history attached to it.

Your Mercari display name

The display name is what buyers actually see. It appears on your profile page, on your listings in search results, in the review section, and in messages. When someone buys from you and tells their friend about it, they're referring to your display name.

Unlike the username, the display name can include spaces, so a brand name like "Vault Vintage" or "The Thrift Stop" is possible here, even though it wouldn't work as a username. It's also not required to be unique. Two different sellers can use the same display name, which is why buyers who want to find you specifically are better off bookmarking your profile URL (which uses the username) than trying to search your display name.

Display name rules:

  • Can include spaces and a wider range of characters than the username
  • Not required to be unique
  • Can be changed more freely than the username
  • Shows throughout the app wherever other users see your name

Which one matters more for branding?

The display name. That's what buyers read, remember, and repeat. If you're building any kind of reselling brand on Mercari, put the version of your name you actually want to be known by in the display name field. You have more flexibility there — spaces, longer character counts, and fewer restrictions.

The username matters for a different reason: it's in your profile URL. If you ever share your Mercari profile anywhere (in a bio, on a business card, in a reselling community), the URL that people type is based on your username. A username that bears no resemblance to your display name makes that URL harder to share and harder to remember.

The best setup: a username that's a clean, recognizable version of your brand (no spaces, within character limits), and a display name that's the full, properly formatted version of that same brand. mercari.com/u/vaultvintage pointing to a profile with the display name "Vault Vintage" — consistent, clear, easy to find.

Checking username availability before you register

If you're still setting up your Mercari account, check that your intended username is available before you commit to it — especially if you plan to sell on other platforms too. A username taken on Mercari might still be available on eBay, Poshmark, or Depop, and vice versa.

Username Inspector checks Mercari alongside eBay, Poshmark, Depop, Etsy, Grailed, Vinted, Whatnot, Bonanza, Ruby Lane, and Chairish at the same time. Enter a username and you'll see which platforms have it available and which don't, before you start registering anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Mercari display name?

Your display name is what other users see when they browse your listings, read your reviews, or message you. It can include spaces and doesn't need to be unique — two sellers can have the same display name.

What is the difference between a Mercari username and display name?

The username is your unique account handle, visible in your profile URL (mercari.com/u/username). The display name is what buyers see throughout the app. Display names allow spaces, don't need to be unique, and are easier to change.

How do I change my Mercari display name?

Go to your profile, tap Edit Profile, and update the Name field. Display name changes are more flexible than username changes.

Can two Mercari sellers have the same display name?

Yes — display names don't need to be unique. Usernames do.

What shows in a Mercari profile URL?

The username. Profile URLs follow the format mercari.com/u/username, not the display name.
