How to Sell on Bonanza: The eBay Alternative

Bonanza markets itself directly against eBay, and the pitch is specific: a base fee of 3.5% per sale against eBay's 13.6%. That's the headline. The more interesting part is what's underneath it — Bonanza runs a tiered system where you choose how much visibility you want to pay for, which is a different model from eBay's fixed rate entirely.

How Bonanza's Fees Actually Work

Every Bonanza sale starts with a base final value fee of 3.5% of the final offer value (item price plus any shipping charged above $10), plus a $0.25 transaction fee per sale — unless you carry a Bonanza membership subscription, which waives the transaction fee.

That 3.5% is the floor, not the whole story. Bonanza layers optional advertising tiers on top, and your commission rate rises with the tier you select:

Tier Max Commission What It Unlocks
Economy 3.5% Traffic from Bonanza.com and its social accounts only — no paid advertising
Basic 9% Organic search, Google Shopping, Bonanza Promotions, Bonanza's Affiliate Program
Superior 19% Higher advertising spend for more competitive placement
Elite 30% Bonanza bids on your items more aggressively across ad networks for maximum exposure

You're never charged until an item actually sells, and you choose your tier per listing, so a $20 item you're not counting on can sit at Economy while a higher-margin item can run at Basic or Superior to chase more eyes. This is the opposite of eBay's model, where everyone pays the same Promoted Listings rate regardless of appetite for exposure. It's also why two Bonanza sellers can report wildly different effective fee rates and both be telling the truth — someone running Elite on everything is paying for a different level of visibility than someone who stays at Economy.

Other fees to know:

  • Listing fees: None for your first 50 active listings. Above that, $0.03 per listing per month, capped at $20/month total.
  • High-value orders: A 1.5% flat fee applies to the portion of any order above $4,000.

For how this stacks up against eBay and everyone else at a specific price point, use the fee calculator — at the Economy tier, Bonanza consistently comes out as one of the cheapest options on the site.

Setting Up Your Booth

Bonanza calls your storefront a "booth," and setup is quick:

  1. Click "Sell on Bonanza" and then "Start Selling Now"
  2. Set your booth title, username, email, and password
  3. Enter your name, address, and contact details
  4. Connect PayPal or Stripe to receive payments
  5. Enter a credit card for fee charges on completed sales
  6. Verify your identity and contact information via a one-time code

The fastest path if you're already selling elsewhere: Bonanza supports importing listings directly from eBay, Shopify, Amazon, and WooCommerce. If you've already built out a catalog on eBay, you don't have to recreate every listing from scratch — it's one of the few features here that actually saves real time instead of just promising to.

Before you set up your booth, check that your preferred username is available on Bonanza and everywhere else you sell — see our username rules guide for character requirements across platforms.

Where Bonanza Actually Wins

Bonanza doesn't have the sharp category focus of a Poshmark or a Grailed — its catalog spans nearly as broad a range as eBay's, which is part of the pitch. That said, sellers report the strongest traction with:

  • Collectibles and vintage goods: Bonanza's buyer base skews toward shoppers specifically looking for items outside the big-box marketplaces
  • Home and garden: a consistently active category
  • Jewelry and accessories: smaller, higher-margin items that hold up well even at lower-tier commission rates
  • Items already listed on eBay: since importing is frictionless, cross-listing your existing eBay catalog costs little beyond the setup time

What doesn't fit as well: Extremely low-margin commodity items where even the 3.5% base fee plus $0.25 transaction fee meaningfully eats into a thin profit. Bonanza's traffic volume is smaller than eBay's, so items that depend purely on high search volume to move may perform better on a bigger marketplace.

Shipping and Getting Paid

Shipping: Purchase USPS, UPS, or FedEx labels directly through the "Buy shipping" link on each order — the buyer's address auto-populates from the order, which saves a step compared to manually entering it.

Payouts: Bonanza pays out through whichever processor you've connected — PayPal, Amazon Pay, or Stripe. For Stripe specifically, expect about a 7-day verification window on your first payment while Bonanza confirms your bank details; after that, US sellers move to a rolling 2-day payout schedule. International schedules vary by country.

Mistakes That Erase the Fee Advantage

Defaulting to Elite tier without checking the math. A 30% commission is well above what most other platforms charge — it can be worth it for items that need the extra exposure, but running every listing at the top tier out of habit erases the fee advantage that brought you to Bonanza in the first place.

Not importing existing listings. If you already sell on eBay, Shopify, or Amazon, manually recreating your catalog on Bonanza wastes time the import tool exists specifically to save.

Expecting eBay-level traffic at Economy tier. The 3.5% rate is cheap, but it also means you're relying on buyers who come to Bonanza directly rather than through paid search or shopping ads. Items with their own following do fine; items that depend on discovery may need at least the Basic tier to get seen.

Skipping the membership subscription math. If you sell consistently enough that the $0.25 per-transaction fee adds up, a membership subscription that waives it may pay for itself faster than it looks.

Before You Import Your First Listing

  1. Check that your username is available on Bonanza and every other platform you're considering
  2. Decide whether you're importing an existing eBay or Shopify catalog or starting fresh
  3. Pick your default advertising tier — Economy is the safe starting point while you learn how the platform's traffic behaves for your inventory
