Mercari Selling Fees Explained: What You Actually Pay

You sold a $40 jacket on Mercari, shipped it, and the payout came in lower than you expected. You did the math on 10% and it still did not match. Mercari's fee is simple on paper, but what it is calculated on, what else leaves your balance, and what happens to shipping all change the number you actually keep.

This guide covers how much it costs to sell on Mercari, line by line, with a worked example and a comparison to eBay and Poshmark.

Mercari Selling Fees in One Line

Mercari charges a flat 10% selling fee on the item price plus any shipping the buyer pays. Per Mercari's fees page, that rate applies to listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025, and the page lists no minimum fee.

There is no listing fee, no monthly subscription, and no closing fee. You pay only when something sells.

The Mercari Payment Processing Fee

Mercari used to add a payment processing fee of 2.9% plus $0.50, which stacked on top of the selling fee. Since January 6, 2025, listings created or updated under the new structure carry no separate processing fee. Mercari's fee structure FAQ says there is no additional processing fee for buyers or sellers.

Some third-party guides still describe a combined 13% or a separate 2.9% charge. Those figures reflect the old structure. If you see a processing fee on an older sale, the help center says the legacy fee was charged to the buyer, not deducted from the seller.

Mercari Shipping Fees: Who Pays and What It Does to Your Fee

Shipping interacts with the selling fee in a way new sellers miss. There are two cases.

Buyer pays shipping. The 10% applies to the item price and the shipping charge. A $40 item with $8 of buyer-paid shipping is charged on $48, so the fee is $4.80, not $4.00. You do not pay for the label out of pocket in this case, since the buyer's shipping money covers it.

You offer free shipping. The label cost comes out of your earnings, but it is not part of the fee base. The fee is 10% of the item price only.

Prepaid label prices depend on package weight and service level, and Mercari adjusts them periodically. Its shipping change announcements list a label price update for Mercari Standard labels starting October 19, 2026, and a May 7, 2026 update for fuel surcharges on USPS Ground Advantage and Priority Mail labels. We could not retrieve a current per-weight rate table from Mercari, so check the label price shown in the app when you create a listing instead of relying on a number in a blog post. Sellers are also responsible for overage charges if a package turns out to be oversized or overweight, so weigh and measure before you list.

For the shipping options themselves (prepaid label, shipping on your own, Mercari Local), see our Mercari selling FAQ.

Worked Example: What You Keep on a $40 Sale

Here are two common setups for the same $40 item, using Mercari's 10% fee and a label that costs $8. The $8 is an illustrative figure, not a quoted Mercari rate. "You keep" is before what you paid for the item.

Buyer pays shipping Free shipping
Buyer pays you $48.00 $40.00
Fee base $48.00 $40.00
Selling fee (10%) -$4.80 -$4.00
Label you buy -$8.00 -$8.00
You keep $35.20 $28.00

The same item nets $7.20 more when the buyer covers shipping. That gap is why "free shipping" on Mercari needs to be priced in deliberately rather than added as a default. Run your own numbers in the fee calculator, which accounts for the fee base on shipping for you.

Payouts and Cash-Out Fees

After delivery, the buyer has 72 hours to review and rate the order. Once they rate it, the funds move to your Mercari balance. From there, per Mercari's payout help page:

Method Fee Timing
Direct deposit (checking account) $0 for successful withdrawals Typically within 5 business days
Instant Pay (Visa or Mastercard debit) $3 per cash-out Typically minutes, up to 30

A $2 non-refundable fee applies to a rejected direct deposit request, usually from a typo in the account details. Instant Pay is limited to once per day and $600 per month, and both methods require identity verification.

Two other costs come up less often. Mercari charges a cancelation fee of 5% of the item price, capped at $25, for frequent cancelations. Authentication services, where they apply, are paid add-ons.

What the Buyer Pays Is Separate

Mercari also charges buyers a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping. It is added at checkout and does not reduce your payout. It still matters indirectly: buyers compare the all-in price, so your listing competes on what they pay in total.

Mercari vs eBay Fees: How They Compare

On a $100 sale with no shipping charged, here is what each platform takes:

Platform Fee structure Fees You keep
Mercari 10% flat $10.00 $90.00
eBay 13.6% + $0.40 per order (most categories) $14.00 $86.00
Poshmark 20% on sales of $15 and up $20.00 $80.00

Mercari is cheaper than both on the percentage. The gap narrows in places: eBay's rate drops in some categories and with a Store subscription, and eBay's fee also applies to shipping the buyer pays, just as Mercari's does. Poshmark's 20% looks steep, but the buyer always pays the shipping label there, which removes the free-shipping squeeze described above. The Real Downside of Selling on Mercari

The 10% rate is the headline, but it is not the main cost for many sellers. Three things eat into results more than the fee itself.

Buyers shop on price. Mercari's audience tends to compare prices and make offers, so the final sale price often lands below the ask. A 10% fee on a lower price leaves less than the sticker math suggests.

Shipping is a margin risk. Because Mercari labels are priced by weight, and free shipping comes straight out of your earnings, a heavy or bulky item can lose a large share of its price to the label.

Money is not instant. Funds wait on the buyer's rating window, and the fast option costs $3. On a $15 item, Instant Pay alone takes 20% of the sale.

Mercari's lower rate suits everyday goods, electronics, and games, where margins are thin. For higher-priced fashion, compare the payout on another platform before you assume the lower percentage wins.

Tips for Keeping More of Each Sale

  • Let the buyer pay shipping on heavier items. It protects your margin even though the fee base grows slightly.
  • Use free direct deposit. Reserve Instant Pay for the rare time you need cash the same day.
  • Price after the fee, not before. Work backward from what you want to keep. Dividing your target by 0.90 gets you the price for a no-shipping sale.
  • Check your username before you list. Your username is on every listing and review, so check that it is available on Mercari and the other platforms you use before you build a following. Our guide to Mercari display names vs usernames explains which one buyers see.

Does Mercari charge a payment processing fee?

Not on current listings. Mercari removed the separate payment processing fee (2.9% plus $0.50) for listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025. Older listings kept the legacy fee, charged to the buyer, until they were updated.
